Authorised to Go and Make Disciples

The parting words of Jesus before He ascended to the right hand of God the Father in heaven, provides the Church with a clear imperative for the task she is called to perform. This is the task, we the Church have been given, by our Lord and Master Jesus Christ, until the day He returns again in power, glory and might to rule and reign over the earth for a thousand years. At that time the kingdom will have come fully, visibly and practically with Jesus as King over the entire earth. His faithful and obedient subjects will have the honour of ruling and reigning with Him. What an age it will be! But we are not there yet. There is unfinished work to be done.

The task is set out in Matthew 28: 18-20, a passage known as the Great Commission, where Jesus says all authority in heaven and earth has been given to Him. We know that all authority belongs to God the Father and as a result of the faithfulness and obedience of Jesus as the Son of God towards His Father , He has now been handed this extensive and far-reaching authority that spans heaven and earth. Jesus goes on to command His disciples to go and make disciples of all nations, baptising them in the name of the triune God (Father, Son and Holy Spirit) and teaching them to obey everything He commanded them.

As a local church, we at Living Water Community Church, are responsible to exercise the authority that Jesus has given us to go and make disciples among the people in our community and beyond. A disciple is a follower and reminds me of the words of the Apostle Paul in 1 Corinthians 11:1 - "Follow my example, as I follow the example of Christ". When a person becomes a disciple of Jesus Christ, the kingdom has truly come within them, as Jesus is Lord over their life, ruling and reigning over their heart. A supernatural transformation has occurred in the life of a disciple by the indwelling presence of God the Holy Spirit. This transformation in the lives of people is critical before any earthly kindgom can be established with Jesus physically and visibily reigning over it. A kingdom populated with people who still have divided and self-seeking hearts, would be no different to the way our world has operated ever since Adam and Eve allowed their hearts to be ruled by sin and self-interest. But the Kingdom of God is not like any kingdom our world has seen. It is a kingdom where Jesus reigns in righteousness, justice, peace and mercy; a kindgom where the hearts of the people are unified and submitted to the loving authority of our righteous Creator God.

So our task as a local church is to co-operate with God to increase the population of people who are disciples or followers of Jesus. Of necessity, discipleship means a person is one hundred percent devoted and dedicated to Jesus and fully submitted to Him. This is what it means to have Jesus as your Lord. Is Jesus Lord of your life? Are you a disciple of Jesus?

We have looked at the Great Commission in this post. In my next post I will be sharing some thoughts about the Great Banquet in the Kingdom of God.

Thy Kingdom Come - A Monumental, Magnificent and Mighty Reign

Hi, I am Oreste Pompetti, the new pastor at Living Water Community Church. I am absolutely over the moon about the unanimous endorsement I received from the congregation last Sunday. I feel very supported and love you all at Living Water Community Church. I look forward to working together with all of you to fulfil the purposes of God in our part of the world.

By the way, I love where we live. Epping, Lalor, Thomastown, Mill Park - this great City of Whittlesea - You gotta love it. God loves it. And He is calling us to extend His kingdom in Whittlesea (and beyond) in readiness for the day when our Lord and King, Jesus Christ, will return to usher in a monumental, magnificent and mighty reign that will eclipse this earth and finally deliver what we have all been longing for- righteousness, justice and the eradication of oppression and evil from our beautiful world.

Take a read of Psalm 72 – reflect on it, see Jesus as the King, see yourself as one of those flourishing subjects in this kingdom of peace and joy. Mark my words, this vision of the Kingdom Come in Psalm 72 will happen whether we get involved or not. I for one want to step into this coming age and look Jesus in the eye with confidence and without shame. Join me in this quest.

Our Father in heaven has given us authority through our saviour Jesus Christ to fulfil the vision he has called us to. He expects it of us. Are you up for it? I pray that you will be.

While I am on the topic of authority, this month I would like to take a look at authority –namely authority that we have been given by God – with whom all authority rests. If you are not able to get to our Sunday morning services to hear any of these messages, why not download the messages onto your MP3 player and have a listen. This is a great thing to do as you’re going for your morning walk or mopping the floors or mowing the lawn.

Have a great week and I hope to see you at Living Water Community Church this Sunday. I would love to meet you if you’re new to our community or if it’s been a while since you’ve spent time with us. There’s a vacant seat with your name on it.

Bye for now,
Oreste
